Preview is Empty

It's because your ace files are not recognized by XnView.
Do you have enable option/General>Use all file format?

Yes, Options > General > Display all image types is checked.

Why would XnView recognise the files for the main window and not the Preview Window?

Not no recognized too in browser window, for unknown file, XnView ask windows explorer to send a thumbnail if possible...
