JPEG2000 and EXIF data

Post by XnViewUser »

Hello,

I wanted to convert a lot of big TIFF files to JPEG2000, but unfortunately all EXIF data get lost.

I was using XnConvert too and there is under "Option" --> "Preserve Metadata", but it doesn't preserve EXIF data.

I already searched this forum, but I only found this:
http://newsgroup.xnview.com/viewtopic.p ... xif#p67027

Is there any way to use a better format than TIFF or JPEG which saves the EXIF data too?

I just got the idea to export all EXIF data to a text file prior to the conversion but again unfortunately there is no such action in XnConvert.

Thanks

Hi Pierre,

thank you for your quick answer. Unfortunately I did not find any software which encodes to JPEG200 including EXIF data.

But as I found, JPEG2000 is the only format which compresses images lossless. Am I right?

Now I found the following solution for me:

1) I export all EXIF data into text file by using ExifTool.

2) Then I convert to JPEG2000.

What do you think to create an action in XnConvert to export EXIF data into a text file?

Best regards

P.S.:
XnView and XnConvert are really great pieces of software. I think there is nothing better out there. Many years I used IrfanView but then suddenly I found XnView and it is much better than anything else.

Nope. Although it does get some of the best compression when dealing with photographic images. I don't know if any of the other lossless formats handle exif data or not though (I never bother with metadata myself).
PNG is lossless of course, JPEG-XR also has a lossless mode (and gets almost as good compression as jpeg2000, but much faster). LWF has lossless, but it's a proprietary format, so it shouldn't really be used unless you have to.

There is one JPEG2000-encoder that preserves metadata including EXIF, Adobe Photoshop's JPEG2000-plugin that writes extended JP2-files. Only odd thing with this is that it seems to use it's own uuid-code so other programs doesn't recognize it, had to check it with hexeditor that it's all in there.
