Supported Format - Thumbnail view of .eml and .html
With Vista, Microsoft has chosen not to let you view thumbnails of .html or
.eml. This use to be an option in XP with the Windows Browser, especially for the .eml thumbnails. A search on the internet has found no other way to view thumbnails of these formats.
When we create and save alot of stationery in .eml format, then the option to view thumbnails of these helps in selecting the one we are looking for. This is done alot when re-creating using a previous .eml or .html.

Welcome to the forum, Millie, and thank you for your suggestion. I'm wondering what your intention is: Do you ask for .html and .eml support?
For displaying thumbnails of Html and eml files there's an Extra plugin XHtm, this might be what you are looking for. But I'm not sure whether the Xhtm plugin will run on Vista.

Re: Supported Format - Thumbnail view of .eml and .html
Thanks for the information. I am interested in having XnView display the .eml thumbnails as well as the .html thumbnails.helmut wrote:Welcome to the forum, Millie, and thank you for your suggestion. I'm wondering what your intention is: Do you ask for .html and .eml support?

So now I guess I do need support because this plugin isn't working in mine 1.92 and I extracted it directly to the Plugin folder. Am I suppose to do something else to install it?
I have XP SP2 and IE 7.
Any help will be appreciated.
Hello Millie & Helmut,
the Xhtml plug-in is no longer needed.
In order to make XnView generate thumbnails for “Web content files” you have to configure the settings for Custom files (Tools » Options... » Browser » File List » File List) accordingly, because files with the following extensions are excluded by default:

I have explicitly set these file types
HTM HTML MHT MHTML XML XHTML
to "show as thumbnail" in Custom file types, but still I can only see the icon. I have also removed the xhtml.usr plugin and removed the corresponding entry in the .ini file (I moved the whole xnview directory to a new Vista machine from the old XP one).
From the various posts on the subject (you'll see several from me in the xhtml plugin topic, I still thought it was necessary... why is it still being updated if it's not needed?) I have not been able to understand if indeed it is possible to view thumbnails for htm, html and mht files under Vista: can anybody help?

I've just tried to view HTML files without the XHtm plugin, and there was nothing but the "e" symbol (for Internet Explorer).

Re: XnTriq -- I am same SkyLabAstro
Hi XnTriq,
Yes I am same SkyLabAstro. However I had to start this new Log In name because I couldn't get loged on with that one. I tried my password, and my email address but guess it doesn't recognize me. Even when I tried to get the password sent to me.
Any fix for me on this one? LOL
Thanks for showing this to me.
Millie
I forgot how to do this quote, but just tried here, from your previous message

I got back to your messages finally. Just had a new PC built, still using XP and IE 7, and am falling in love with the technology all over again. It is 3x as fast as my old DELL, runs cooler, dual core, all the bells and whistles, and a window side so I with a blue light so I can see inside. Whoopiee!
Ok, here's what a friend found with Vista to view eml and html. I could hardly believe what Vista can do with thumbnails.
--- View my eml in thumbnails from outside of Windows mail. With IE view documents, with preview pane to the right of my files and it not only shows a shot of the stationery, but all the motion and music as well. Likewise, when I look at something I have saved from a website--videos
mainly, the second shot I am sending is of the music/video player in the preview side of the shot ---
I can get screen shots of what they showed me. If you would like to see where this was found.

XnView relies on “HTML Thumbnail Extractor” (shimgvw.dll) for that.helmut wrote:XnTriq wrote:... the Xhtml plug-in is no longer needed. ...Has XnView HTML, XHTM support itself? When was this introduced?

Windows XP users need to roll back changes made by SP1 and/or SP2:
- Kelly's Korner (Kelly Theriot, Microsoft-MVP)
- Registry Edits for Windows XP
- Restore Thumbnail Views in XP: xp_thumbnail.exe
- Tweaks and Tips from Kelly
- Restore HTML, HTM, URL Thumbnail View: htmlthumbnail.reg
- Restore XML Thumbnail View: xmlthumbnail.reg
- Registry Edits for Windows XP
Thank you for the explanation and links, XnTriq. But why fiddle around with registry entry when a simple installation of the XHTML plugin does the job? (At least on Windows XP)XnTriq wrote:XnView relies on “HTML Thumbnail Extractor” (shimgvw.dll) for that.
