1.93.6 tries to phone home, freezes if not allowed
I know it's probably only an update check, but people HATE IT when apps phone home. ZoneAlarm intercepted XnView 1.93.6 from phoning home and after I did not allow it, it promptly freezes everything (until you allow it to phone home.)
I had to physically unplug the internet to unfreeze XnView 1.93.6, then go to Tools... > Options > System Integration > Check update: Never to solve the problem.
What is the last version of XnView that does not phone home?

What is the last version of XnView that does not phone home?

“Check for update option” was introduced with v1.93.6 (01/May/2008). There was no v1.93.5.

Ok, i'll check why it freeze, but if you uncheck update, all is ok, so why do you want old version?
Pierre.
Excellent question.
Because
1. My computer illiterate family will click to view a picture on their computer.
2. XnView will ask to access the internet ,
3. They will instinctively click on NO to not allow it.
4. Their system would freeze and they would not be able to view any pictures since XnView will continue to ask to access the internet every time they try.
So the answer is: we are looking for stability and a program that under no circumstances updates itself, potentially causing problems with new versions.

But if on the first page dialog, you choose never for update, you have not this problem!c627627 wrote:So the answer is: we are looking for stability and a program that under no circumstances updates itself, potentially causing problems with new versions.
And please could you try the 1.94 beta 2 to see you have always a freeze?
Pierre.
The XnView freeze was caused by
1. XnView tries to access the internet
2. ZoneAlarm (version 5.5.094.000 on a test system) intercepts Xnview from trying to send data out.
3. XnView freezes waiting for ZoneAlarm to let it send data out.
4. Disconnecting the internet and then going to XnView > Tools... > Options > System Integration > Check update: Never
solves the problem.
This is not a big deal for most of us that know about settings, but can be a headache for friends & family that do not. Of course you are correct that problem can be solved through changing the settings.
It's a judgment call whether to have XnView by default send data out. Most programs do anyway but any future problems might be solved by leaving the automatic update OFF by default. Then users can choose to select turning automatic updates ON.
Thank you for making this fine program.

Re: 1.93.6 tries to phone home, freezes if not allowed
Three years later, I just tested XnView v1.98.2 on WIndows XP to see if this issue was ever addressed and it will still freeze if ZoneAlarm 5.5 does not allow it to access the internet.
The only fix is still: Tools... > Options > System Integration [lower left, under View] > Check update: Never
There's no way most computer illiterate people will find that on their own so the only solution is to still use XnView 1.93.4 on their systems which doesn't phone home for update checks.
Maybe have a prompt that asks to check for updates - that way if they click NO - it would not freeze?

Why it's a problem to change Options>System Integration>Check update?

No problem for you or me. It must be nice to have friends and family who are half-way computer literate. But if you don't - and many many of us have plenty of computer ignorant family & friends, then guess who they call when XnView freezes up?
It is a 45 minute phone call *with each of them*.
15 minutes just to find 'System Integration' on this page:

It's strange that you have a freeze...c627627 wrote:No problem for you or me. It must be nice to have friends and family who are half-way computer literate. But if you don't - and many many of us have plenty of computer ignorant family & friends, then guess who they call when XnView freezes up?

Re: 1.93.6 tries to phone home, freezes if not allowed
The freeze is not system specific. Yes I replicated on on old system by installing http://www.oldapps.com/zonealarm.php?old_zalarm=9 ZoneAlarm 5.5.094 (which does nothing much other than intercept files from phoning home on Windows XP)
But I can also replicate it on my i7 system using http://personalfirewall.comodo.com/free-download.html Comodo Firewall > Right click on Firewall icon > Firewall Security Level > Block All
When nothing is allowed to go out, you can see how XnView can freeze if you check for update just like on old Windows XP & ZoneAlarm. If XnView is not allowed to phone home - it freezes.

Re: 1.93.6 tries to phone home, freezes if not allowed
The program should not freeze.
When it does, only the computer literate users like us know how to navigate this, friends and (older) family do not and whoever has them knows what I'm talking about.
