XnC 0.95 Mac: Can't open...not supported on this type of Mac

Post by rbarker »

Hello...

I am running Mac OS X 10.6.6 on the original Intel-based Macbook Pro 17"

By the way I am super excited about the standalone converter. Thank you!

I did run into a problem with the Mac version. I downloaded both XnConvert-mac.dmg and XnConvert-mac.tgz from the "XnConvert beta 0.95" announcement. The app contained inside either compressed file has a circle-slash through the icon, and will not run on my Intel-based Mac.

Upon running the app I get two popup error messages that say, "You can't open the application XnConvert-095 because it is not supported on this type of Mac." When I click OK on both popups they go away and the app never opens. I have attached the error, the Finder Get Info panel for XnConvert-095, and the "About this Mac" for my Mac.

Thanks,
Robert.

Hello...

Sorry for the delay. I've been out of pocket.

XnViewMP 0.35 does function on my Intel-based MBP 17". However, XnConvert 0.95 continues to refuse to load on my Mac--still reporting, "You can't open the application XnConvert-095 because it is not supported on this type of Mac."

Good news is, I just tried XnConvert 0.98, which loads well on my Mac. I look forward to taking a closer look at it in the coming days.

Thanks,
Robert.

Ok, 0.95 was 64bits, and 0.98 32bits...

Hello again!

A 64bit-only app hadn't occurred to me.

I usually right-click and app and choose Get Info to ascertain if a Mac OS app is PowerPC, Intel, or Universal. Upon reading your post, I realized I didn't know how to ascertain if a Mac OS app is 32, 64, or both 32 and 64-bits.

In the Mac OS System Profiler, Software, Applications and I can see that an app is PowerPC, Intel, or 64-bit Intel; however, if an app is 64-bit capable it cannot tell you if it is also 32-bit capable. I did find a command-line method of ascertaining an app's available architectures: i386, x86_64, ppc, and or ppc64.

Code: Select all

file /applications/xnconvert-098.app/contents/macos/xnconvert
I also found how to ascertain if I am using a 32-bit or 64-bit Kernel: i386 or x86_64.

Code: Select all

uname -a
From what I've read, however, Mac OS almost always boots with the 32-bit Kernel unless you press and hold the keys 6 and 4 during boot-up. And that may only work on newer Intel models.

Thanks!
Robert.
