What does "Image Data" (Ctrl + shift+c) is supposed to do ? ... because it does nothing here (MP linux 0.56 version x64)

The "Image Data" feature copies the 'raw bitmap' image (of any picture file) to the system clipboard.

You can then Paste it in an Image editor to use such as MS Paint or Photoshop®

Copying of image date is not new, it also exists in XnView classic too

...I thought it was to copy the exif data or similar into a text mode

... ok then this function works here too ... and I never have to use it - lol.

Yes I understand what you mean when you thought that "Image Date" meant copying/handling Exif or other metadata.

Yes the copy "Image Data" function is relevant as a separate command but alternatively if you open a picture in view mode, you could Select-All (Ctrl+A) the viewed picture and then Copy (Ctrl+C) then this would do the exact same as a "Image Data" command, however you must Select-all the picture first or else you will end up copying the file. It's a smart way of features within XnView

So you are proposing that "Image Data" be renamed to something else?

I think most XnView software users are acclimated with the name "Image Data" since it dates back to times of XnView classic. I'm ok with the existing name.

The only other name I can think of to use would be (in English) something simple as "Actual image"

For pasting into Outlook, one must choose (via "Paste Special") one of the above. (Outlook Paste defaults to "File", which means an attachment is automatically appended, not always what the user wants).

Having separate options is for those of us who anticipate the behavior of other software and want to skip a few UI steps (after the copy and before the paste).
