Beginner needing help with XnView & renaming photos

Post by patty22459 »

<Moderator's note: This topic has been moved>

Good Afternoon,
I have just recently downloaded XnView and am having trouble when I rename my photos (the photo disappears and they turn into what looks like a piece of paper, with one corner folded down, then a box inside of that, with a blue header and then 3 dots red blue white).
When I go to My Easy Pics and then copy them back to my auction lister, the HTML turns to a red x in a box (instead of a photo).
This didn't happen before when I used XnView (we just got the computer back from the shop where it had some work).
I think my first problem is, when I rename my photos in XnView, I need to know why the pic goes away and turns into this icon.
Thanks!
Patty

I think you are probably not adding the file extension to the new name. For some reason, Xnview does not include the file extension by default. I find this frustrating. I often forget to type in the file extension because most other programs will write the extension for you. But, this has not changed lately I don't think.

Feature request: It would sure be nice if during a rename, Xnview would add the extension. If I rename "A.jpg" to "B" I would like Xnview to automatically add the .jpg.

Windows has a concept for filenames with name and extension. The extension is the rightmost part in the filename separated by a dot. E.g. in "sample.jpg" the extension is ".jpg". In many situations, the extension plays a very important role, for example when double-clicking on a file in Windows Explorer, Windows opens the file with the program associated with the extension ".jpg".

For some reason which I and many other people do not understand, in Windows this concept is partly hidden: When working with MS Explorer, by default the setting "Hide file extensions for known file types" is activated (this setting can be changed in options dialog of MS Explorer). This means that in most cases MS Explorer will not show the file extension. Often, there's no need to know about the extension and this concept, but when renaming files for example, it really causes problems if you remove the extension when renaming.

So the problem partly lies in the fact, that people do not know or understand what happens behind the scenes.

What could XnView do to improve this? Handling extensions in XnView could be improved, e.g. by using a "Rename" dialog rather than "in situ" renaming, see suggestion "2 Feature Requests for File Renaming". Let's continue discussions there.

We have a rename…

Post by Clo »

:) Hello !

- We have already a dialogue to rename one file from Edit menu >> Rename (F2), instead the rash "Rename inplace" in the tree, or on the name-label of the thumb-nail.

- There are two editable fields : [——Name——]] • [Extension], and the assigned extension is alright written already in its field for the file to rename.

- Like Helmut points out above, the Win default setting hidding the extension is totally stupid and even dangerous, i.e. if you'ld have a malware file so-named thingy.bmp.exe which is a virus, and the .exe final real active extension is hidden !

 Kind regards,
Claude

The problem is that it works differently from the browser. If you rename from the browser, the entire name is highlighted and if you only type the file prefix, the extension is not written.

:) Indeed, it's right, and I vote in favour of an option able to display the aforesaid dialogue instead the "Rename inplace" on the name-label of the thumb-nail !

- It could be an INI entry like :

RenameThumbFile = Flag
Image1 : Displays the “Rename…” dialogue,

Image0 : Uses the actual rename inplace.

- However, like Helmut says above too, the first step should be to enable the extension display in Windows, so the full name+ext is shown even for the Rename inplace operation :
Start Menu >> Parameters >> Configuration Panel >> Tools Menu >> Folders Options >> Display >> UNtick the box to hide the extensions… or so, it's in French here.
