just had the chance to test XnView MP 1.9.2 (now I can see the convert dialog). But unfortunately, both Export and Batch Converting to AVIF lead to the same exact issue. My system is still as described in my post (MacBook Pro 16", 2019, Intel, MacOS Sonoma, now 14.7.5)

i use name.xnbak.ext and not name.ext.xnbak to keep extension, else file can be as unknown type like name.ext_original

Ok, thanks for confirm. So, back to Q2 - if I start the app pointing to the unique folder xnviewUSB.ini, do I need to edit any entries in that .ini to point the app to the local USB files (.db, .keys etc), rather than the defaults at .config/xnviewmp folder?
You can start XnView with defaults ...
