1.9.4 - Cannot delete selected video file

Post by john_kowalsky »

XnView: MP 1.9.4 - 64 bit
OS: Windows 11 64bit

Cannot delete selected video file when context menu, Delete or SHIFT+Delete keyboard combination is used. Confirmation dialog displayed, but nothing happens when user chooses 'Yes'. The same steps work for JPEG, file is deleted.

Effect: Video file is not deleted, only hidden from the browser

To reproduce:
1. Open a mapped network drive folder with video files in Browser. (I have MP4 HEVC files from mobile phone).
2. Choose a video file.
3. Choose Delete from context menu or hit Delete or SHIFT+Delete key combination.
4. Choose 'Yes'.
Actual behaviour (bug): File is not deleted (when context menu or Delete button is used it disappers from Browser but not from disk, with SHIFT+Delete nothing happens) :bug:

Expected behaviour: File is deleted

do you have auto playing for video? Are you able to reproduce each time?

Confirming this issue for me with 1.9.4
It is so critical for me I had to revert to 1.9.3 (SEE EDIT)

In current and previous versions:
When Video Autoplay is on, even when no "preview" window is being displayed, the video file is played in the background.
However, at least in 1.9.3, delete and move operations on videos seem to work correctly even with the autoplay feature on.

in 1.9.4:
Deleting AND Moving video files don't work correctly.
The problem affects not only currently selected/previewing video, but ALL VIDEO FILES IN A SELECTION.

When a delete operation is done on a selection of videos, NO ERROR is displayed and the user is given a false sense the operation was completed successfully. Videos are "removed from view" for a minute, but on refresh the video files show up again, and were never in fact removed.

When a move is made, an error is displayed that it could not remove the original source.

I think the behavior was consistent and it was happening to me pretty much every time. It made program unreliable for me to use.

I did not test the behavior in 1.9.4 with auto play videos setting off

Edit:
I decided to do more testing.
One thing to note: I use the zip version and extract/overwrite files when changing versions.
I do have most my files on a TrueCrypt volume, but it is mounted as a regular NTFS drive and not a network drive. I don't believe this is relevant, because:

While I was back on 1.9.3 I just randomly decided to turn off auto play videos
I re-downloaded & extracted 1.9.4 to test some specifics, the auto play was still off since my config carried over.

Results: Videos were being moved/copied successfully with no issue

I then turned back on auto play videos
Unexpectedly, videos STILL seemed to be moving & deleting properly!
Videos were ALSO NO LONGER being "played" in the background if there wasn't a preview window (for example, I could no longer hear audio from them). Great!

This seems to have completely fixed the issue for me, but I will update again if any further issues crop up!

Complete conjecture, but perhaps some config/setting was a bit wonky because of upgrading my XnView like I have been for so long over many versions? I just like to have my config and such carry over.

@john_kowalsky: Try what I did and see if it fixes it? Or alternatively with a fresh install of the program?

After further using 1.9.4, the main issue of not being able to move or delete the selected video returned, as well as hearing a "phantom" instance of the video even with no preview window visible.
I do not know which action caused the issue to return. I was able to clear the issues by restarting the program.

It seems like the program is getting to a state somehow, where it will start to open a instance of the video in the background when AutoPlay is enabled, AS WELL as an instance of the video in the preview window if that is visible.

The invisible instance of the video can be heard.

If a preview window is visible, and a video is selected, often the two "Instances" can be heard simultaneously, slightly offset, producing an "echo" effect.

Disabling AutoPlay and then re-enabling it does not fix the issue.
The issue does not happen if AutoPlay is off.
Restarting the program does seem to clear the issue, at least for a while.

Things I do which may play a part in this:
- I have two Saved Layouts I switch between regularly. Only one of them has a preview window.
- I sometimes switch which audio device is playing audio for a specific program (including for XNView) using EarTrumpet (similar to using built in windows Volume Mixer).
I was not able to reproduce the issue intentionally though.

Disabling auto-play and re-enabling fixed issue temporarily, but it returned once I updated to 1.9.5

I can confirm this remains an issue in 1.9.5!

Sometimes: clicking on a video file will play it in the background (audible) even when there is no preview window.
This additionally causes a conflict with the file still being in-use at a time the program doesn't expect and is not unlocking the file when deleting or moving it.

Behavior is inconsistent. It does not happen every time even with the same file and I have still not found a reliable pattern to reproduce. Once the behavior starts though, it becomes a problem until the program is restarted (and perhaps when auto-play setting is turned off/on again).

I try test delete selected MP4 in to browser use Shift-Del on Win7 SP1 x64 and XnView MP v1.10.4 x64 - success. For control used Far Manager b6661 and options Show hidden or system files is ON. Yes, I see delay <=10 ..15 seconds after send OS command "Delete" and event "File deleted". Only.

it happens because video file is selected in Browser
there is no issue with deletion if video file is not selected in Browser (eg you navigated to video file from another file)

B
make sure video file you are trying to delete is open in Viewer tab as well

C
no crash anymore, but nothing happens - file is still there, undeleted
