With Options>Read/Write: 'Show hexadecimal for non-displayable files' ON, when you open a non-displayable file via Menu>File>Open, you get an error message "Format of the file <> could not be determined".
XnView should directly show the Hex mode without any error message.
I don't get an error message with Beta 2 but the files fail to appear in hex mode in XnView.

You nailed it! I just set Options>Keyboard/Mouse>"Open action" for 'All other files' to 'XnView' and the unknown file was opened in hexaview...

...XnView should open a file in XnView if I specifically use Menu>Open(rather than using Keyboard/Mouse on Filelist) and bypass all those "Open action" settings. This is the way it works for recognized files, right?

Yes, I think Menu>File>Open bypasses all those settings (with some version or another).
