For applying an operation on many files, there is two ways:

a- You can use NConvert
b - You can use the Batch conversion of XnView

For using NConvert (a), you have to be familiar with command shell and scripting. There's more info in the newsgroup 'NConvert'.

Using XnView for Batch conversion (b) is quite simple. In the XnView browser select several files and then choose menu 'Tools > Convert...'. In the dialog 'Multi conversion' you specify file type and output directory to save and if you want, you can also apply one or several transformation. This can be effects and filters for example. In the help document you will find more infos on the usage of XnView, multi conversion is not described in detail, yet.

Important note:
Before converting many files, you should start with a small number and do some testing.

And you should be aware that saving files in JPG format will loose some of the original quality. And if you save a JPG file, again, you will again loose quality. See also the discussions in

- Smaller image has same file size
- Resizing image results in larger file
