Hello, I don't know if this has been suggested somewhere else in another topic, but anyway, I did not find it:
For big files, it would be nice to have a progressive preview of it.
For Raws (if full-res) and big TIFFs, for example, it always takes a long time after double-clicking on the thumb until we see the image in XV.
But it could be appearing much faster because we don't need all the pixels of the image to give a window-fitting view of the image. Typically a 10 megapixel image is often 4 times bigger than the placeholder for the image in XV on most computers. So we need only one of 4 pixels.
The image only needs to be fully loaded when it's viewed at 100% zoom.
I think, I provided a poll for it, that:
A lot of users prefer to have a blurred or not perfectly correct preview of the image that appears INSTANTLY, rather than wait until XV fully loaded the image to finally see the image in a window-fitting size.
After having loaded the first instant preview, XV could work in background to open the image fully, while the user observes his preview.
I know of some users who are disappointed that they have to wait so long to open their big image files, because they don't know what XV is doing.
Now opening works perfectly, but we are not patient, and we often don't need the image to be fully loaded.
It may seem not so important, but subconsciously, people will be much more confident in their software if they see it reacting instantly.

Re: progressive preview for big images
Yes a great suggestion, i'll check if it's possible easily
Pierre.
Great news..Yes a great suggestion, i'll check if it's possible easily
it might easy.. or not, but as far as I'm concerned this is the number one issue that could make xnview finally usable for me (and probably not only me)
I'd be surprise to see anyone voting for the "make me wait longer (loose time and loose track of the order of the current pic I'm viewing)"
so this poll will certainly hold no surprise. but if that makes Pierre tackle that issue. this is just great News.
Discussions about performance-related issues like read-ahead caching, smooth scrolling/panning, HQ zoom, etc.:
- High quality zoom without performance loss
- Speed of High quality zoom, more HQ zoom options?
- Faster zooming when 'High quality zoom' is active
- Slow zoom
- Preview is way too slow. Is this normal ?
- Cache image prerender and cache the display as well
- Smooth scrolling
- Load image on interruptible thread
- Smooth image ahead
- Ultimate loading...
- Delay when switching quickly forthback with HQ & Cache
- Faster image flipping and high quality display
- HQ Resizing: Testing speed and asking for new options
- "Instant" high quality button
- No delay preview.
- Zoom to a defined screen-section while browsing
- Image quality
- Instant Low-res image like Picasa 3
- Progressive display
I guess that there are at least 2 types of progressive display:
1. Low res => High res image displayed progressively
2. Showing the top of the image first and moving to the bottom progressively
ACDSee is using the 2nd method to display any image.
It would be great to have either option implemented in XnView, and even better to have a choice to choose either one.
Is this currently being implemented in the next version?
