1.9.8 Move operation does not remove video from source

Post by venik »

XnView: MP 1.9.8 – 64 bit
OS: Windows 11 – 64 bit

Short description:
The application cannot move a video file when it is selected in the file browser, regardless of whether autoplay is enabled or disabled:
move operation copies video files but does not remove them from source

Effect:
The user is unable to reorganize or manage video files using the Move command. Video files remain locked or unmovable while selected, forcing the user to use external tools to delete them.

To reproduce:

1. Open a folder containing one or more video files.
2. Select a video file in the browser (autoplay enabled or disabled).
3. ctrl + M to try to move the video selected.

Actual behaviour (bug):

The video file cannot be moved while it is selected.
This happens both with autoplay enabled and disabled.
Error message: "Cannot remove source" is shown.

Expected behaviour:
A video file should be movable,

Thank you in advance!
Love XnView! ❤️

Venik, your problem might be happening because Windows Explorer locks the file when it is probing metadata and/or creating a thumbnail, and that can take a long time with video files; it’s very annoying.

To test for this condition, first, temporarily disable your antivirus to prevent file scanning, then do the following using the command line only:

1. Create a new directory, like c:\test
2. Copy an existing video file into that directory.
Do NOT try to view the folder/directory or file in explorer in any way. Don’t even have a folder view of C:\ open.

3. Now try performing your operation on that file using XnViewMP.

There should be no opportunity for Explorer to lock the file doing the above.

You can also download from Microsoft the Sysinternals utility "Handle" to learn what process has an open handle lock on your file...

Hello, sorry for the late reply.

I don’t have any antivirus installed.
I can confirm the described scenario. However, it is quite common to move a video file right after watching it, regardless of whether autoplay is enabled or not.
Has this issue been reproduced on your side?

PS: attached you can find a screenshot

On Windows 11? So you removed or disabled the built-in “Windows Defender”?

Sorry, I don't understand what you mean by "confirm the described scenario". Are you saying you do NOT have the problem when you follow my steps above, or you DO?

I suggest you download the utility I mentioned and find out what process is locking the file.
