Ok, thanks for confirm. So, back to Q2 - if I start the app pointing to the unique folder xnviewUSB.ini, do I need to edit any entries in that .ini to point the app to the local USB files (.db, .keys etc), rather than the defaults at .config/xnviewmp folder?
You can start XnView with defaults ...

ok, thanks, i can reproduce with 'Save as' & 'Save copy'. 'Save' will overwrite the file and keep overlay.

I have to do Metadata > Update catalogue from files to make the Category become selected in the Categories panel and the Has Category Overlay icon appear on the thumbnail. Should I have to do Metadata > Update catalogue from files?
you don't need to do that, overlay will be added automatically ...

In my original ini where categories aren't working, categoryStatus="1,1,0,0,1,1"
With the new ini file, this line reads categoryStatus="1,1,0,1,0,1"
It's the status of expanded group
So still not exactly sure what "broke", but creating the new ini seemed to fix the issue. Any idea why ...
