Re: XnView MP 1.8.3
I just tried to install, bui 'failed' (or so it said - I seem to have 1.8.3 despite all the problems).
I had recently installed 1.8.2.0 for the first time on my Win 11 Laptop. Installation completed without issue and it ran fine.
Today I ran XnView and got a message about a new version, so I took the easy path of clicking the link which downloaded the installation file to my downloads folder. I ran the installation. It asked me to close two running programs - windows explorer and XnView. I closed them both and I asked it to proceed. Next thing I notice is, my task-bar at the bottom disappeared - it appeared that the installed killed the one 'core' explorer.exe instance that runs the start menu, task bar, etc. I also got an error about its inability to update some shared resource (sorry, I did not note it down). It recommended I abort the installation which I did.
Since task bar at bottom was gone, and thus, 'start menu', I used ctrl-alt-del to launch task manager and from there, ran 'explorer.exe', and that brought back my task bar (but the start menu still did not work - no problem I don't use start menu much). I used explorer to navigate to C:\Program Files\XnViewMP and ran XnViewMP.exe from there. XnViewMP came up fine, and help/about shows 1.8.3 - the new version.
So - installation reported a failure but I do seem to have the latest version.
I tried a second installation attempt, and this time, right after launching the installer from the downloads directory, I closed File Manager so there were no open instances of explorer.exe, but the install again flagged that 'explorer.exe' was running. There was, technically, an instance of explorer.exe running as there is ALWAYS one instance running to provide taskbar, etc. But the installer should not care about that.
I re-ran the installation a third time to take notes. I chose to install the XnView Shell Extension. I chose NOT to install a desktop shortcut or quick launch shortcut. I again got the message 'the following applications are using files that need to be updated by setup. It is recommended that you allow setup to automatically close these applications. After ...'. The only application listed is Windows Explorer. (I had left ONE explorer session open pointing to the installer file). So I said 'next'. A progress window appears 'closing applications'. After a long time, this action finally times out and says 'setup was unable to automatically close ...'. I was about to manually close it, but - it was already closed - no visible explorer sessions. So I clicked 'Try again' ... . After another long delay, the action again times out and gives me the same message. So I then say 'cancel the installation' ... .
I'm now going to have to reboot to clean up some of this mess. Then I'll try again.

Re: XnView MP 1.8.3
The same happened to me. I've installed lots of XnView updates, but this is the first I've had any problems with. Sounds like the installer REALLY hates updating the Explorer shell extensions while Explorer is running, but unlike most normal programs, that install everything they can and then finish the job during a reboot, it insists you close all active Explorer sessions before proceeding. News flash: The latest version of Windows 11 doesn't have an option to completely close Explorer. Task Manager only offers to restart it, not close it, and if you could close it, you wouldn't be able to run the installer, except maybe after removing the existing install, or rebooting in Safe Mode.
The good news in my case was that the install finally went through after I unticked the option to update the shell extensions. It squawked about detecting they were installed, and not being able to update them, but didn't remove them at least. I still think I want to go back, uninstall it, and do a clean reinstall. This is a giant step backwards in terms of functionality, and I can't believe all of these hoops are really necessary - especially when they've never been needed in countless previous installs. I hope whatever is causing this gets resolved before I need to update it again.

Re: XnView MP 1.8.3
When using XnView MP when I select multiple raw image files, the select Metadata / Edit IPTC the following dialog is presented (unable to attach the image of the dialog for some reason):
"Field values are not loaded because 'Do not load field values' is checked"
Can someone please explain:
1) What does this message mean?
2) Where can I find the option referenced in the dialog? - I haven't been able to find or recognize it yet...
Thanks.
